Pointe shoe quiz December 14, 2010

Who is the maker of this dancer’s shoes?
What change has she made to her right shoe and why?

  1. Paul S That's not the maker. Look at the throat of the vamp of her left shoe, ok?

  3. Hi Paul S, Sorry... not that one either. It's from an American maker. And the modification?

  4. Jill,

The modification is to the box area of the shoes, I'm not sure what you'd call the actual 'modification' itself but they appear wider than stock?

I'm going to go for Gaynor's.

Fingers, toes and arms crossed it's the right answer!

  5. Hello Jill ,

    There look like Gaynors .
It looks like two mod.'s have been made.

One to the heel with extra ....possible heel pad or to prevent the heel from slipping down in the shoe .
Two on the ribbons Since the in a knot in one shoe . I am going to rule out Velcro .
It appears to be the elastic break to prevent Achilles tendon damage.
    How did I do?

  6. Hi Paul S, Yes, that's the maker, but that is a standard unmodified toe-box. The mod is at the heel. What is it and what is it used for?

  7. Jill,

Now you come to mention it... quite apparent now...

Would the modification to the heel be for added support/high-impact heel work?

    Paul.

  8. Ok guys... You are both right about her shoes being Gaynors, good guess Paul S! She is wearing Gaynor Minden pointes.

She has added material to the heel of her right shoe to increase the heel height to help keep it on her foot. This is a common Eastern European trick (often seen used with pointe shoes that have no drawstring) where the drawstring casing is opened to add additional height to the heel. Since GM shoes have drawstrings she has probably added material to the back of the shoe.

Paul D was also correct that she is using elastic sections in her ribbons to reduce the likelihood of tendonitis.
