Breast protection: I’ve found that Lily Padz not only stop my nipples from leaking and staining my blouse, dress or gown when I become aroused while I’m out socially, but also offer protection for my nipples from a man’s roving hands. Vaginal discharge: Since I am cycling naturally depending where I am in my menstrual cycle I use different types of devices to manage the various types of vaginal discharge; fertile cervical mucus (FCM), menstrual flow, arousal lubricant and liquefied semen. I like to plan ahead when possible so I’m always protected should an opportunity arise to have penetrative sex with an unprotected man.

Returning readers know I prefer using a latex flat spring rim diaphragm or a silicone Oves cervical cap. Caya the pros:

• Designed to fit women who wear conventional diaphragms from 65mm to 80mm.
• The soft 75 mm polymer rim spring flexes to accommodate depth of 65mm conventional diaphragm wearer.
• Matte texture of the cup increases sensation for the male partner.
• Grip dimples provide finger placement guidance and firm grip for insertion.
• Removal dome makes removal easy. And cons:

It has the capability of surface supplying four divers simultaneously at the bottom of the 136 ft. portion and have Nitrox and Trimix capability as well as refilling standard gas cylinders.

The dive facility is buried beneath the ground on the opposite side of the castle from the stream, a tributary of the Severn, and will be reached by a passageway and dressing rooms off the castle cellars. Water comes from the stream and be heated by an extension off the hot water radiator system - on a different heating zone - from the biomass boiler. The dive facility was supposed to be completed by summer, but was finished in September and it took a month to fill and another week to warm the water to a temp in the mid seventies Fahrenheit.

Human reproductive fluids and vaginal pH

No form of birth control (except abstinence) is 100% effective so a girl’s worst fear can be realized when a pregnancy is unplanned regardless of why it occurred; from an unprotected casual encounter or from a contraceptive failure. It’s what responsible sexually active women try our best to avoid and what correct use of effective contraceptive methods is all about. Fortunately women facing an unplanned pregnancy now have several options.

pH (potential of hydrogen): The term pH refers to a numerical measure of the acidity or alkalinity of any solution. pH values typically vary across a scale from 0 to 14, with the pH of neutral solutions equal to 7, increasing values have increasing alkalinity and decreasing values have increasing acidity. The pH of the vagina corresponds to the secretions continually produced in conjunction with the vaginal flora.

Normal vaginal pH: pH refers to the vagina’s acidity level. A vaginal pH of 3.8 - 4.5 (slightly acidic) indicates that there is a perfect amount of good bacteria (lactobacilli), and no overgrowth of the bad bacteria that can cause odor, irritation and sometimes infection.  A home vaginal pH test kit measures pH on a scale of 1 to 14. Abnormal vaginal pH may be higher or lower than normal vaginal pH. High vaginal pH numbers indicate less acidity, while lower than normal vaginal pH levels indicate high acidity. Abnormal vaginal pH frequently indicates the presence of a vaginal infection. However, not all vaginal infections cause changes to vaginal pH. This means that having a normal vaginal pH test does not mean that you do not have a vaginal infection.

If the vaginal pH is above normal, the most likely reason is that the woman has bacterial vaginosis (BV) and not a yeast infection. In this case, don't use OTC medications for vaginal yeast infections because the medication does not treat BV. You’ll need to see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

On the other hand, if the vaginal pH is normal or below normal and she has had previous vaginal yeast infection diagnosed by a doctor, she could try one of the OTC medications for vaginal yeast infections. If the OTC medication for vaginal yeast infection does not cure the vaginal symptoms or infection, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

 So, what makes pH rise higher than 4.5? There are a surprising number of triggers that can upset the vaginal ecosystem:

• Menstruation: Blood has a pH of 7.4, so during your period, vaginal pH becomes elevated.
• Tampons: Since they retain the fluids that cause pH to increase, tampons can contribute to the problem, especially if you “forget” a tampon and leave it in too long.  
• Intercourse: The pH of semen is 7.1 to 8, slightly alkaline.
• Douching and cleansers: Any vaginal infusion of water or other fluids can affect vaginal pH. The pH of water is 7, and fragrances and perfumes can also irritate the vagina.
• Menopause or pregnancy: These are times where hormones fluctuate, which is associated with elevated pH.
• FCM; Fertile cervical mucus: In normal conditions, fertile cervical mucus has a pH level of 6.5 to 8.5 and should be able to stretch 10cm in either direction. FCM will temporarily decrease the acidity of the vagina to help sperm survive the acidity of the vagina during a woman’s fertile interval.

Semen: A viscous whitish secretion of the male reproductive organs, containing spermatozoa and consisting of secretions of the testes, seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands. It’s also called seminal fluid. The pH of semen is 7.1 to 8, slightly alkaline. 

The average sperm count today is between 20 and 40 million per milliliter in the Western world, having decreased by 1-2% per year, from a substantially higher number, decades ago.

Total sperm count, or total sperm number, is the total number of spermatozoa in the entire ejaculate. By WHO, lower reference limit (2.5th percentile) is 39 million per ejaculate. The median ejaculation (50th percentile) contained 255 million sperm.

Sperm motility: A more specified measure is motility grade, where the motility of sperm is divided into four different grades:

• Grade a: Sperm with progressive motility. These are the strongest and swim fast in a straight line. Sometimes it is also denoted motility IV.
• Grade b: (non-linear motility): These also move forward but tend to travel in a curved or crooked motion. Sometimes also denoted motility III.
• Grade c: These have non-progressive motility because they do not move forward despite the fact that they move their tails. Sometimes also denoted motility II.
• Grade d: These are immotile and fail to move at all. Sometimes also denoted motility I.

Volume: WebMD advises that semen volumes between 1.0 mL and 6.5 mL are normal; WHO regards 1.5 ml as the lower reference limit. Low volume may indicate partial or complete blockage of the seminal vesicles, or that the man was born without seminal vesicles. In clinical practice, a volume of less than 2 mL in the setting of infertility and absent sperm should prompt an evaluation for obstructive azoospermia. A caveat to this is to be sure it has been at least 48 hours since the last ejaculation to time of sample collection.

Semen pH: WebMD lists a normal semen pH range of 7.1-8.0; WHO criteria specify normal as 7.2-7.8 Acidic ejaculate (lower pH value) may indicate one or both of the seminal vesicles are blocked. A basic ejaculate (higher pH value) may indicate an infection. A pH value outside of the normal range is harmful to sperm.

Liquefaction: Liquefaction is the process when the gel formed by proteins from the seminal vesicles is broken up and the semen becomes more liquid. It normally takes less than 20 minutes for the sample to change from a thick gel into a liquid. A liquefaction time within 60 minutes is regarded as within normal ranges.

Spermicides: In order to make barrier contraceptives more effective there are formulations of chemical, Nonoxynol-9 (N-9) and lactic or citric acid mixed with a gel carrier that provides an acidic pH to immobilize sperm should a condom break or a diaphragm leak or become displaced. ContraGel (advertised by its maker not as a spermicide, but as a barrier method when used with a cervical barrier) uses a base of lactic acid with a pH of 3.8 which is hostile to the sperm.

For dive-sex we use a private label product called DiveGel+ (in 10 ml prefilled disposable applicators) which is a specially formulated silicone gel that won’t degrade silicone cervical barriers fortified with a pH balanced biocide and FloraFix a type of Lactobacillus with a pH of 3.8 that helps maintain the acidity of the vagina regardless of how many unprotected men a girl is penetrated by per day. For non-diving encounters the formulation is being rebranded as ‘FloraFix’ and packaged in 5ml disposable applicators and is being used very successfully by our escorts.

My cervical barriers: I dislike using condoms unless the man has an unknown sexual history. I love the skin-on-skin contact which Oves permits me and the feel of a man’s liquefied fluids draining out of me after he has done his biological best to impregnate me. While the rest of my circle is all fitted with copper IUDs I still prefer to use an Oves cervical cap or a diaphragm.  I stocked up on Oves before they went out of business and use them each for multiple cycles, so if I don’t get preggers or have a change to the surface of my cervix I should have enough to last me until menopause. At 42 my fertility is declining, but I still have regular cycles and love how well both Oves and my diaphragm (depending where I am in my cycle) are protecting me.

 

 

Training diaphragms & Libertines

Training diaphragms at St Lucy’s: The Milex Arcing diaphragm with its ‘G-spot button’ in the center of the dome has become the choice for young women learning to identify their G-spots through a gas-guard. Both the Omniflex (coil spring) and the Arcing have extrusion nubs in the center of the inside of the dome but the Arcing diaphragm is preferred to train new users because the Arcing folds into a crescent making it easier to slip beneath and behind the cervix to place correctly. Some few women can actually feel the center nub press on their G-spots during penile thrusting (though most can’t) which is how the ‘G-spot button’ got its name. Milex has a deeper dome than the Semina (Barbie Barrier) of pink transparent silicone that is a fave of St Lucy’s students but a Milex is a more rugged device and better suited for use during rough or dive-sex.

Fluids in the dome: One of the first things students are taught about diaphragms, if they are using one for contraception, is immediately upon its removal to analyze the fluids collected in the dome. Depending on where a woman is in her cycle and if she has had sexual intercourse with a man the possible fluids that could be collected in the dome of a cervical barrier are: fertile cervical mucus (FCM), ovulation spotting, menstrual flow, naturally produced arousal lube, spermicide and if there is a leak, semen.

Reading the fluids in the dome of a diaphragm isn’t quite like reading tea leaves, but it isn’t an exact science either and it takes practice to do it well.

• FCM or egg white cervical fluid is (for most women) clear (though for some it can be yellowish), thick, slippery, bioadhesive and very stretchy. It occurs a few days before a woman ovulates and if sperm reaches a woman’s FCM it can swim up into her tubes more easily and live for as long as 5 days awaiting the release of her egg.

• Ovulation spotting occurs from the woman’s peaking estrogen destabilizing her endometrium at ovulation and is usually seen as a brown (oxidized blood) stain coloring any other fluids in the dome.

• Menstrual flow, collected in a diaphragm is a fluid colored from bright red to black (depending how long it has been collecting in the dome) or with clots if her endometrium is coming away from the walls of her uterus in chunks rather than dissolving into a thick fluid.

• Spermicide will liquefy ay body temperature and as a clear gel looks very much like FCM except that it is not stretchy.

• Semen a few minutes after it is released by the man turns clear and is bioadhesive and often not mix with other fluids so if there is a lot it can be easily seen if the woman knows what she is looking for. Spermicide will take care of the little that might get past the rim due to dynamic flexing of the walls and rim. If the diaphragm has displaced or if there appears to be a lot of semen in the dome taking EC is advised if the woman knows she is not in the luteal phase of her cycle or if she doesn’t know where in her cycle she is.

Jack on encounter sex: “Virtually all of the sex you write about is what I would term "encounter" sex... as opposed to relationship sex. Encounter sex is of course selfish as noted... and has nothing to do with establishing or holding on to a man in an enduring relationship. Of course, if both partners see sex as encounter sex, fidelity and relationship sex are not even a consideration. Sex, become a sport, a competition and we can see how BDSM and fetish fit so well into this paradigm with their strong emphasis on rules and roles. Sure when folks are single they go hunting for encounter sex to bars, parties and clubs where people are advertising their wares (attire). Most people, who are into encounter sex, want to have many conquests and variety. They wear these conquests like a resume… the more the merrier. So it might make sense if one approaches sex with the encounter paradigm that equipping oneself with all the skills and kit would make one more competitive and desirable in the "meat/meet" market. We all know men like women who look and act like whores in the "bed"? But we know that bed has nothing to do with fetish sex... I'm sure for singles class in perversity would be possible if one is trying to get a competitive edge in the dating mating encounter game. I don't see that moms and dads find this something to have their daughters educated in however. While to some they might become elite sexual performers and achievers, it hardly seems to be something one would proudly announce to grannie or the neighbors at a dinner party. I'll take that all with a bit of deep sea salt.”

Assertiveness & the mate market: “If both partners see sex as encounter sex, fidelity and relationship sex are not even a consideration.”

Not so, since from a woman’s perspective the market for the best mates is very competitive and assertiveness using all a woman’s skills is often necessary to participate successfully in the highest reaches of society today. Soft skin, lovely smiles, gloriously long satiny hair, Jimmy Choo stilettos and $1,500 Dior frocks in public tend to hide the ‘accidental’ sharp elbows and knees often used in women’s gyms and dance studios to move a competitor out of the way even in the most seemingly polite circles. This is why a competitor will often change classes, gyms or studios to escape training with a rival.

That’s an understandable, but incorrect, view from an outsider. St Lucy’s has been around long enough that we have a large percentage of legacy students whose grandmothers attended St Lucy’s themselves and not infrequently underwrite their granddaughters tuition. We have a very supportive alumnae organization that has enhanced the gene pool of a great many prominent families in North America and Europe while guiding female offspring toward an exceptional education of the mind and body at St Lucy’s.

I rather like being thought of, by men anyway, as a Libertine. Being thought of that way lets me know that my actions and teachings are being understood and appreciated for their usefulness and not just as social constructs. In class I don’t espouse any beliefs. I just teach the methods available, their pleasures, risks and possible consequences making sure the students understand the safest way to use – or not use - the devices or perform the activity. And I do stress that assertive sexual tendencies should be carefully limited to personal social relationships since one does have to blend in to polite society.

Waxed pubes and Penetrator plugs: One of the rituals that St Lucy’s student’s value is their periodic visits to the Brazilian waxing salon at Body Buffers in our casino shopping arcade. Wearing a Penetrator plug keeps the girls on a regular pelvic grooming schedule because pubic stubble makes it likely that they will get ingrown hairs from the pressure of the plug if their pubes aren’t kept smooth and the plug won’t seal well causing it to leak, usually at the most embarrassing times like in a développé or split or when trying to act sophisticated for a boyfriend. A full wax is best ahead of an annual pelvic exam especially for escorts because there is a lot of manipulating of the labia and insertion and removal of various devices; plugs, vibis, gas guards, vaginal hooks, dildos etc to check for proper size and fit. Even with the fitter wearing well lubed latex gloves getting pubic hair pulled can happen and it’s no fun, so a fresh waxing a few days before an exam/fitting session or an intense sexual encounter is always a good idea.


My ME and gossip: I was CD28 and went in for my menstrual extraction (ME) yesterday. I usually wait for CD1 (which is today) when I start having my period, but I wanted to be able to wear my Oves cap over the weekend when Jacques and I dive the pit, my 68 ft deep pool. Returning readers will remember that a diaphragm used for contraception or as a gas guard during dive-sex is only effective down to 10 meters, about 33 feet. Beyond that point the rim will distort and the diaphragm will leak so it should not be used to prevent pregnancy or to keep air or water from being pushed into the cervix and uterus where they can cause infections or an embolism, which is why a woman needs to wear an Oves or FemCap if she expects to have penetrative sex while diving below 10 meters. By having my ME yesterday I am wearing a Milex Omniflex yesterday and today to collect the residual bleeding and will switch back to Oves on Saturday morning. While I was in the stirrups having my endometrium sucked out my Gyn was filling me in on the latest gossip.

An immaculate conception: She told me about a 17 y/o technical virgin (she has never been penetrated by a penis) who came in with her mom for counseling. The girl is very newly preggers and both she and her mom are freaking out. It seems that at her father’s insistence the daughter had taken a virginity pledge. Her father is a very intense and outspoken religious conservative so what ever choice they make if he finds out what is going on there is no telling what he might do. I think it’s almost certain they will decide on termination and if they use Mifeprex they need to decide in the next week or so. A menstrual extraction could be performed a bit later but if they decide to terminate the sooner the better. I’m guessing keeping the baby isn’t an option because of the possibility of inbreeding and how to believably explain to the father/husband that his daughter needs to be away from home for 8 or 9 months.
